BLANKETS 101

Rambo Optimo

The Perfect Fit

We’ve reached that time of year where our equines need to be well bundled!  Each brand and model of horse clothing is going to fit a little different – make sure you get the right fit for your build of horse.  Like our own clothing, a well fitting piece makes a difference in comfort and function!

The Top

The ideal blanket is comparable to your favorite pair of jeans – there are multiple things you want to watch out for to find that “perfect pair”. The top of the front closure should be at the point of your horse’s shoulder without any pulling or gapping.  Underneath the closure, the two sides of fabric should have a slight overlay.  The closures should fasten snugly without the buckles being strained.   Ideally, you should be able to slip one hand between the blanket and your horse’s withers.

The Back and Sides

In addition to the front, a correctly fitting blanket needs to also fit properly in the back and on the sides.  When looking at the blanket from the back, the ends should reach the tail.  If the edges cover the tail, it is too long.  The blanket also needs to be long enough to keep your horse’s underside warm.  It should cover your horse’s stomach entirely and the ends should come to just below the elbow.

Can’t Find the Right Fit?  Try These Brands!

Horses with a large chest or shoulders can often develop shoulder rubs.  If your horse has this problem, try the V-Front closure system that can be found on the Rambo OriginalRambo Duo, Rambo Optimo, and Rambo Wug.

Weatherbeeta Freestyle

If you have a high withered horse, try a blanket with a high neck cut.  This will prevent the blanket from sitting on the horse’s withers – give the Rambo Wug a try!  The Weatherbeeta Freestyle also features a Wither Relief Pad.  This pad lifts the blanket off the horse’s withers and mane.

If you are still having problems finding the correct fit for your horse, ask one of our sales associate to help find that perfect blanket!
